Defining Ableism Down
The new edition isn’t out yet for Honderich’s new Oxford Companion to Philosophy. There is, as yet, no publication notice on the Oxford site. The Guardian article notes that, “This time round, free from the constraints of the academic circus, he’s been free to make 300 additions, including ‘ableism’ – ‘it basically means being condescending to cripples.’”
The 1995 edition includes no reference to ableism, and the current one (from 2005) defines it as follows:
No guess on whether it’s something he just told the interviewer or what have you, but there’s still time before this is all published it appears.
